ABOUT MY PROCESS | ABOUT MYSELF
I use line, layering, transparency and opacity in order to bring structure, light and depth to the pieces I make. One central element is often the tension that is created at the edge of balance.
My paper making process begins as I gather and choose materials. I'm drawn to material for their textural nature and the resonance of their color. For that reason I often use linen and abaca pulp as the structural base of my compositions - linen for its strength and the natural beauty of its color, and abaca for its translucency.
Through intuitive exploration of the materials' properties and limits, I engage directly with
the materials. By being present to the process I attempt to invoke my personal vision as my paper pieces are created.
The nature of paper making is spontaneous and immediate. Sometimes while working I consciously choose the next step, but more often something reveals itself and the work is no longer in my hands. Instead I am in the hands of the work. I strive to create integration between the organic and geometric, tranquility through repetition and pattern, and tension between beauty and its opposite.
It is by engaging in the process that I find my truth. My intention is to draw you, the viewer,
into my process through viewing my work and in that viewing bring my truth to you. |
